Product description
Monoamine oxidase (MAO, EC 1.4.3.4) is an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of monoamines. MAO exists on the outer membrane of mitochondria and is mainly found in various organs of vertebrates, especially in secretory glands, brain, and liver. It is also present in invertebrates and plants such as bean sprouts, where it catalyzes the metabolism of monoamines, albeit in lower amounts. MAO catalyzes the deamination of monoamine substrates to produce the corresponding aldehydes and hydrogen peroxide. The resulting hydrogen peroxide reacts with 4-amino antipyrine to produce a colored substance with a maximum absorption peak at 510nm. The MAO enzyme activity can be determined by measuring the change in absorbance at 510nm.
