Product description
The pigments contained in chloroplasts are mainly two categories: chlorophyll (including chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b) and carotenoids (including carotene and lutein). They combine with proteins on the thylakoid membrane to form pigment-protein complexes. The amount and composition of these pigments determine the plant's absorption and utilization efficiency of different lights and are often used as important indicators in the study of photosynthetic physiology. Based on the absorption of the visible spectrum by the chloroplast pigment extract, the absorbance of the chlorophyll extract is measured at 649nm and 665nm, and carotenoids are measured at 470nm. Empirical formulas are then used to calculate the content of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoids in the sample.
Additional Materials and Equipments Required
Visible spectrophotometer, balance, 1 mL glass cuvette (light path 1cm), 10 mL glass test tube, aluminum foil, anhydrous ethanol.
